SantosPostal Supports Client in Race Against Cancer

Brent Goldstein, SantosPostal client and cyclist, found support in his community to raise funds for First Descents, a nonprofit organization that sends young adult cancer patients and recent cancer survivors to Colorado for kayaking and other outdoor activities.

“I was able to successfully complete the Leadville 100 (which is actually 104.2 miles long according to my odometer). It was far and away the most grueling day of my life and one of my proudest accomplishments,” said Brent.

Brent and three friends set out to join the race and raise funds at the same time. Their initial goal was to raise $25,000 but, with SantosPostal’s help, they far exceeded that goal, reaching more than $78,000.

“ I visited a First Descents ‘Camp’ in Colorado and met 20 amazing young individuals who are recovering from cancer treatments. Most gratifying is that this particular camp was a late addition to the summer schedule and was made solely possible from the funds that you all provided,” Brent said while thanking his sponsors.

SantosPostal Client Sees A Way to Help
SantosPostal client, Bob Martin, is involved in helping the people of Merida, Yucatan, and you can help too by just opening your drawers at home.

After years of visiting Yucatan, Bob Martin not only fell in love with the land but the people as well. Unfortunately, the poverty level is extremely low. A good day’s wage is less than five dollars, so there is a desperate need for help.

One day, Bob came across 15,000 eyeglasses in a barn in Frederick County, MD. While visiting a clinic in Merida. he found that they had a special technology to sort used eyeglasses by prescription and then match them with new owners. Bob successfully waded through all of the “red tape” and on February 1, 2007 opened an eye clinic!  Just weeks after the opening, hundreds of Mayans could see for the first time in their lives!

How You Can Help
Many people have several eyeglasses just sitting at home collecting dust!  Regardless of prescription, size, color or if they are just reading glasses, all glasses are acceptable. Bob Martin accepts donations in the form of both glasses and cash. Donations may be sent to the Tree-Land Foundation Inc, PO Box 535, Myersville, MD 21773. Old glasses can be deposited in one of the donation boxes located in many optometrists’ offices, or simply be given to a member of the Lions Club.
